Chapter 1 Fishbowl Reflection

Think about the discussion from Chapter One of The Outsiders. What did you learn about the characters? Create a list of at least five things you learned from the discussion. You might want to consider some of the following to help guide you:

  • What is it about the relationship between Ponyboy and Darry that is hard for both of them?
  • What do you think S. E. Hinton would say about different social groups?
  • Using some examples of the dialogue in Chapter One, explain how the way the characters speak to one another and what those words reveal about their relationships.

Please use at least one quote from the text in your response. Remember to use quotation marks and cite the page numbers.

The inner circle did a great job on doing there meeting. They came up with many different conversations to talk about like relating the story to there family and friends and giving there opinions on every thing. Now about the story. There are three brothers living together because there parents died in a car crash. They have many hard times because there are Johnny Boy which is 14 then there is soda who is 16 then the oldest is Darrel who is 20. The group decided that the most important part was when Johnny got jumped. Johnny was walking back from the movies when he noticed a car following him. Then as they got closer he realized it was there rival gang the socs. Johnny was only two blocks from his house so he would try to make it but he got caught. One of the socs jumped on him and said “Greaser do u want me to give you a hair cut and I will start from the chin down”. Then his gang the greasers saved him and fought the socs away. But the greasers will never be able to beat the socs because they are poor and the socs are rich. That was the most important part of this chapter.

I think the inner circle did a good job on helping people understand what is going on in the book and who the characters are. I got a much better detailed explanation on how the gangs have been interacting. One quote that helped me is this: "We're poorer than the Socs and the middle class". I think that that quote shows why the Greasers might be considered lower and less respectable to the Socs, which is why i think that the Socs and the Greasers are rivals. The inner circle also helped me learn that there are gangs and rivalries everywhere in the world and there is conflict between people when their way of life differs. I also learned that Ponyboy and Darry have such a bad relationship mostly because their age is so different and they do not get eachother very much, like how Ponyboy and Soda can relate to eachother.

I learned that the reason Ponyboy, Darry, and Sodapop don’t go to a foster home because Darry is older than 18. I learned that all the brothers and gang live in the same area. I also learned that Sodapop is like a father to Ponyboy. I also think that it is hard for Ponyboy and Darry to get along because they both lost there parents in a car crash and because Darry is so mean to Ponyboy. “I could never please him. He would have hollered at me for carrying a blade if I had carried one. If I brought home B’s, he wanted A’s, and if I got A’s, he wanted to make sure they stayed A’s. If I was playing football, I should be in studying, and if I was reading I should be out playing football.”

I learned that the characters in chapter one are all members of a gang called the Greasers and then there’s a gang against them called the Socials. The main character is Pony Boy and he lives with his older brothers because his parents died. His brothers are Darry and Soda Pop. Pony boy gets along with Soda Pop because he understands him, cares for him and sticks up for Pony Boy. Darry on the other hand doesn’t understand Pony Boy. Therefore they do not get along. Darry likes to put down Pony Boy and makes him feel like he has to improve all the time so he doesn’t get into trouble. That is what I learned about the discussion.

The inner cercal got me thinking of a lot of things. also when they where talking about Darry and why he had custardy

• The relationship between ponyboy and Darry is that they are so different. Ponyboy likes to read books and talk and also go to the movies. Darry likes to be quiet and doesn’t like to do many things like Ponyboy dose.
• Darry said on page 13. “you don’t ever think” “not at home or anywhere when it counts you must think at school, with all those good grades you bring home” that means that he needs to think when he needs to think like when he got jumped and not as much at school.
• Ponyboy was comparing him to Johnny and Johnny got a lot whirrs than ponyboy. Ponyboy just got a few cuts and Johnny got beat up in a vacant lot and he got so beat up he was afraid of his own shadow for a wile.
• After Ponyboys parents died his older brother got custardy of him and his brother. Now they live in a house. Darry is there legal guardian.

• Darry and soda worked at the same gas station. Darry worked nights and Soda worked days. Ponyboy doesn’t have a job.

1. Why didn’t the boys go to an orphanage when their parents died? They didn’t go to an orphanage because, Darry was old enough to take care of them.
2. Ponyboy got jumped.
3. Sodapop is more of a father figure Ponyboy.
4. This chapter takes place in the street and at Darry's house.
5. Sodapop said he was going to marry Sandy when she gets out of school
Group one did a great job in the inner circle.

I think the inner circle did very well on the first fishbowl session. They helped me to get a better understanding of the book. I noticed that just about everybody in the group participated. They asked questions and answered questions. They talked about the
characters and quoted from the book quite often. They also made several connections between themselves, the book and the characters. Somewhere in the conversation it was said that Poneyboy is the youngest out of his brothers and the gang. They concluded that Darry is only hard on Ponyboy because he is proud of him and loves him. “Listen kiddo, when Darry hollers at you ...he don’t mean nothin’. He just has more worries that somebody his age ought to. Don’t take him serious…you dig, Pony? Don’t let him bug you. He is really proud of you because you’re so brainy. It’s just ‘cause you’re the baby-I mean he loves you a lot. Savvy?” This is a quote from the book that helped me to understand why Darry is always so hard on Ponyboy and not as hard on anyone else.

The inner circle did a good job on holding the conversation they talked about how old the characters are. Also here are some of the ages the characters are. First there’s Johnny boy he is 14, then Soda he is 18, then there is Darrell and he is 20. They live together because there parents died in a car accident. And the only reason that they can live together is if they don’t get into trouble. Also Johnny gets beat up by some Soc’s. And they say “Hey Greaser you want hair cut?” and then when they try to give him one he squirms around. Then they punch him in the face when he tries to scream for help, then the blade slips and cuts him.

I think that the inner circle did a really good job. For one reason is because they talked about a lot of different parts in the story. The thing that got me the most was when everyone was talking about the gangs in the story and comparing it to our everyday life. It is not that different because in the world there are multiple different styles of people. What everyone seem to miss is seeing that other say things or even sometimes do thing that are not very right to other that are not the same. I think that because of Ponyboy's parents passing away has a lot to do with what kind of person he is. Also because of his oldest brother Darrel, who is 20, has a lot to do with who he is because, of him being so hard he is on Ponyboy. In school Ponyboy does get good grades and always uses his head but when it comes down to it he don't use it other wise. I strongly believe the most important part of chapter 1 is Ponyboy gets jumped in the start of the book, because that could lead to the next thing in the next chapter.
