Chapters 2 & 3 Fishbowl Reflection

Think about the April 21 fishbowl discussion about Chapters Two and Three of The Outsiders. Write a reflection of at least five different observations about the characters. Feel free to include any ideas that the inside circle may have missed. You might want to consider some of the following to help guide you:

  • What are your thoughts about the characters and the relationships they have?

  • How are the Greasers and the Socs alike and different? Which group is stronger? Why?

  • What is family life like for the some of the characters?

  • What are the perceptions of Ponyboy, Soda, and Darry regarding the way they treat one another?

  • How do Ponyboy and Cherry feel about each other? Why?

Remember to include at least one quote from the novel in your comment. Don't forget to include the page number!

-My observations on charectors while listening to the inner circle where that i thought that Cherry's boyfriend could possibly be one of the socs that beat up Johnny. I also realized that greasers are a rough group but never to other greasers. And what goes around comes back around. I no longer look at ganga as being cool after being in the outer circle on april 21 2008, I also noticed that Greasers dont realy look for fights but dally does.
-My thoughts on the charectors relationships is that all of the greasers treat eachother better then their own family.
-Greasers and Socs are alike because they both get in fights, they are different because The socs have alot more money then the greasers. I think the socs are stronger because they have alot more people and alot more money for weapons.
- The family life for most of the charectors isnt verry good because some of them get beat and some's parrents are dead.
-The perceptions of Ponytboy, Sodapop and Darry are that darry grew up to fast and is taking too much responsibility for only being 20 and Darry looks at Ponyboy like he is stupid at home and Ponyboy looks up to Sodapop like he is a god.
-Ponyboy and Cherry feel like they can tell eachother any thing. They also feel like they where meant to be.

On page 46 it says that the people who came to the girlfriends house in the blue mustang was Cherry’s boyfriend witch was the one who beat him up and that is what Ponyboy thinks and so do I.
When Dally slashed another greasers tire I thought why did he do that to another greaser because the rules of the Greasers is to stick together and not get caught and he broke both of those rules and he got what he deserved.
On page 24 when Johnny yelled at Dally “Leave her alone” it kind a caught me off guard because Johnny looks up to Dally and he never really talked so I thought it was kind of weird when he yelled at Dally and Dally just walked away he didn’t yell back are anything witch was weird because Dally doesn’t take that from anyone.
Ponyboy and Sodapop are doing really good in the family but Pony and Darry is a different story they have been fighting a lot and when Soda sticks up for Pony he would usually stop but not this time he yelled at Soda and he had never done that before witch was weird but the really weird thing is when he hit Ponyboy. I don’t think he meant it but he still did it and I was really shocked.
I think the greasers have more respect. I think this because the Soc’s would always get in a fight and just for fun. The only greasers I know who dose that is Dally witch I thihnk is really bad.

-I learned by listenig to the fishbow yesterday that the reason Darry left the movies is because Jonny stood up to him. That their laws are stay together and dont get caught. I also learned that greasers give more respect to girls they know than to the ones they dont. The reason Darry was mad at Pony was because he came home so late. I also learned that Jonnys parents dont care if Jonny comes home or not, and that Ponys parents died 8 months ago,

I thought chapter 2 & 3 kind of explained more and the inner circle brought that out like on page 27 it said that two-bit came up behind pony boy and Johnny and touch their shoulders and in a deep voice he said “okay greasers you had” but when they realized that it was two-bit pony boy look over at Johnny and his eyes were shut and his face was as white as a ghost and his breath was smothered gasp so as we know Johnny has been jump before and when he was jumped it was really bad so he doesn’t want that to happen again so he gets really scared that’s why everybody in the greasers know not to mess with him.
On page 34 pony boy and cherry are said talking and they were talking about how Johnny got jumped and the socs did it to him and she was telling pony boy that not all socs were like that they have problems to she also said that it was rough all over. Pony boy said he believed her and went back to the movies.
I like all the characters they are all really interesting and I like the book. Some people I think can relate to this book in some parts of the book I can relate to it to because a lot of my cousins have been jumped before and one time my cousin got jumped and right before he got to the hospital he died

1. What I learned from the inner circles that Darry slapped Ponyboy and Sodapop, Darry and Ponyboy were very surprised. What I though when he slapped him was that he slapped Ponyboy because he hated him, but actually it was because he was more of a father figure to Ponyboy, but he didn’t think of Darry that way.
2. A main subject that they talked about was how the groups are alike and different. The differences are that the Greasers “stick together” and the Socs have more money. I think these are big subjects because is u don’t have a “family” in the gang it’s going to be hard to stick together. Also if u have money you kind of have it easy, but Cherry said that they have problem too. Other wise they are alike the quote that cherry said that is on page 34, “I’ll bet you think the Socs have it made. The rich kids, the West-side Socs. I’ll tell you something, Ponyboy, and it may come as a surprise. We have troubles you’ve never even heard of.”
3. I think that Cherry and Ponyboy might have a relation ship going on, but then toward the middle of chapter 3 cherry said that in school that she is not going to say hi in school and don’t take it in offence. The inner circle though that was sad and so did I so I think that they don’t have any thing going on now.
4. I think they treat on another with respect, but just Pony boy and Darry dislike each other a lot. I think that Ponyboy and Sodapop have a very good relation ship Ponyboy considers him as a father figure not Darry. The second relation ship that is the best in the group is Johnny and Ponyboy, their like best friends and that what I was talking about when I said they are like a “family” as a gang.
5. The last thing that the inner circle talked about was how Johnny got jumped by Socs. They said that he was cut up so bad and that they could barley know who he is, that’s how badly he was hurt. Every one started to cry for Johnny because he is like the pet of the gang and that they love him a lot and they would never hurt him because of what happened. When Cherry and Marcia got picked up by a couple of Socs one of the guys had rings on and had a Blue mustang, just like the guys who almost killed him.

I learned from listening to the fishbowl was Ponyboy, Johnny, and Dally met two Socs girls at the drive-in and they treated them with more respect them anyone else would. But Dally was talking rude to them so Johnny did something about it and told him to knock it off. So Dally was really surprised about that and walked away. Johnny has never done that to anyone before. I also learned that Dally hit Ponyboy when he got home from watching the stars with Johnny. Ponyboy was so angry he walked out of the house; no one has ever hit Ponyboy before. I think Dally hit him because he was really worried about him because he came home late.

-In chapters two and three of The Outsiders I learned that Ponyboy, Johnny and Dally all went to the drive-in and there they met two girls. These girls weren't Greaser girls they were Soc girls. The three of them treated the Soc girls better then they would the Greaser girls.
-Something that I realized during the inner circle is that the Soc that beat Johnny could have been Cherry's boy friend, because when the Socs came back and picked up their girlfriend’s one of the Socs had a lot of rings on his hand.
-I think that in a way Socs and Greasers are alike and different in many ways. They are different because the Greasers are poor and the Socs are rich and get whatever they want. Also there girls are very different because the greaser girls are rude and tough, when the Soc girls are nice. They two different groups are alike because on page 29 it said "Stick together and never get caught." I think what they were saying is that you must always be by your friends side no matter what happens. They both also get in fights with their rivals.
-In chapter three Darry slaps Ponyboy across the face and after that Ponyboy and Johnny ran away.
