Chapters 10 & 11 Fishbowl Reflection

The May 13th fishbowl group really dug deep in The Outsiders as they drew on connections among characters and events throughout the novel. What ideas stood out for you? Consider the following as you write. Remember to include at least one quote with in-text citation, AND please remember to say something insightful about why you've selected it.
  • How have the chain of events in the novel impacted Ponyboy? How do they explain his behavior?
  • Describe the reasons why Johnny and Dally were connected.
  • How have your understandings of the differences between socs and greasers been reinforced in this selection?
  • How has the relationship between Ponyboy and Darry shifted? Explain!

1. The reason that Dally and Johnny are connected is because their families were similar. “What do they matter? Shoot, my old man don’t give a hang whether I’m jail or dead in a car wreck or drunk in gutter.” (P.88, Hinton) This shows that they have similar families because Johnny’s parents don’t care where he is or what he is doing, and neither does Dally’s. 2. The relationship between Darry and Ponyboy has shifted because Ponyboy knows that Darry cares about him. It also says on (166, Hinton) “He’d never called me that before. Soda was the only one he called ‘little buddy.” This shows that he does care about Ponyboy by calling him his little buddy because he use to only call Soda that and Darry and him are close together. 3. The socs and greasers are different because when Randy comes over to their house he tells Pony that he wants to tell the truth because he feels that he let his dad down by getting mixed up this. Pony thinks to himself that you think you’re mixed up in it and then he gets upset and says he is the one who killed Bob and he is the one that had the knife.

1. In chapter ten Johnny had just died and Dally was very upset and ran out. Once he ran out he went and robbed a store, when he is running from the cops he called Ponyboy and told him how he had just robbed a store. All the boys freaked out and went to go find Dally once they found him the saw the cops right behind him. Dally pulled out a heater (gun) and lifted it up in the air, once the gun was in the air the cops shot him and he died right there. I think that he did this because he said that he had only ever loved Johnny and that no one could go on without him. In chapter 10 he said on page 153 “I been carry’in a heater. It ain’t loaded, but it sure does help a bluff.”
2. I think Dally and Johnny were so much a like because they both didn’t have parent that loved them. They were also always out and away from and sleeping out side. Also the two of them got in some trouble at times. I also think that they only really loved each other because they were so much alike.
3. Everything that has happened in this story has affected Ponyboy majorly. Some things that affected him was Johnny kill Bob, having to run away because of it, death of Johnny and Dally, and also his running away because of his brother. I think all this made Ponyboy weaker, but stronger at the same time because at points in the story he would be depressed and then he would learn that it was that persons time to go, or that he had learned his lesson and had grown from it all. Ponyboy is one of the weakest ones by him being the youngest and not having to go threw as much as the older boys have gone threw and now that Ponyboy has seen how bad it really is out there he is starting to under stand how harsh it is to be a greaser.
4. During chapter 11 Ponyboy got really sick and also was in a comma for a couple of day. The reason for this is because during the big rumble Ponyboy was already and little sick, and the reason why he was in a comma was because in the fight one of the Socs started kicking Ponyboy in the head. While Ponyboy was at home sick Darry and Soda took care of him. Something that was really big while he was sick that Ponyboy asked for Soda and Darry and this showed that he really did love Darry and he did think of him and didn’t want him to be out of his life.
5. Ponyboy was getting better when Randy came over to see him. While Randy was over they talked about going to court and saying the truth about how Johnny killed Bob, but Ponyboy told Randy that he had killed Bob and also that Johnny wasn’t dead. He told him this because he really thought tha

1. I think that the only reason why Ponyboy and Darry's relationship in the book is shifting because Pomyboy is really seeing that he wants to stay living with his brothers. "That's what's worrying me. If the judge decides Darry isn't a good guardian; he makes me study and knows where I am and who I'm with all the time. I mean, we don't get along so great sometimes, but he keeps me out of trouble, or did. My father didn't yell at me as much as he does."(P.165, Hinton). To me that shows that Ponyboy is seeing what Darry is going though and finding out that he really does care about me.
2.What makes me think that the Soc and the Greasers are different because when Randy talked to Ponyboy, It shows that the Soc's don't always stick together when they need them the most. "I'm not going to show at the rumble tonight," Randy said slowly (P.115,Hinton).
