Chapters 8 & 9 Fishbowl Reflection

The inner-circle had many rich insights to share in their discussion on May 7th. What stood out for you? List five ideas and elaborate. Remember to use at least one quote with in-text citation to receive full credit.

Here are some guiding ideas and questions to help you think:
  • How is Darry's gang different from the others who showed up at the rumble?
  • Why is losing Johnny so hard for the gang?
  • Discuss the conversation between Ponyboy and Johnny at the end of Chapter 9.
  • Compare and contrast what you learned about socs and greasers in this selection.
  • Why did S. E. Hinton title her novel The Outisders? Explain.

1. The rules to the rumble were that there would be no weapons and the first one to run loses. These rules had been assured by Cherry when they were at the vacant lot and before they started the rumble. On page 141 the gangs sort out the rules and one of the guys from the socials stepped up and said,” Lets get the rules strait- nothing but our fists, and the first to run loses. Right.” 2. Pony’s gang is different from the other two gangs because their gang isn’t organized. They also don’t have a leader they are just a bunch of guys who stick together. They also are different because they are more of family to each other and the other gangs are just a bunch of different guys. 3. The reason it is so hard for the gang to lose Johnny is because he is the gang’s pet. Johnny is the one person they couldn’t get along without. 4. The greasers and the socials are the same because they are just people and they have problems to but the socials aren’t so emotional but they are sophisticated. They are different because the socials seem to have everything they want and everything they need where the greasers just barely get by. 5. I think S. E. Hinton titled the book The Outsiders because Pony’s gang is the outsiders. They don’t fit in at school because they are greasers. They are the outsiders because their gang isn’t really a gang it’s more of a brother hood.

In the fishbowl on Wednesday the inner circle helped me understand a lot about chapters eight and nine. In these two chapters a lot went on. First off Johnny has been in the hospital since the fire and isn’t doing to good. That night was the rumble and the boys went to go see Johnny. While at the hospital Johnny’s parents came to see him but Johnny did not want to see them. Later that night the boys went to the rumble and the Greasers won. Then when the boys got to the hospital they talk to Johnny for a bit then Johnny died. Losing Johnny was really hard for the gang because like it said on page 121 “we couldn’t get along without him. We needed Johnny as much as he needed the gang.”
I think this means Johnny had no where else to go and he was like the gangs little brother.
The discussion between Johnny and Ponyboy meant a lot because Johnny told Ponyboy, “Stay gold, Ponyboy. Stay gold…..” (Page 148) Johnny remembered the poem in the church. Then after Johnny died Dally punched the walls and ran out of the hospital room.

• One observation of a character a made was that Ponyboy really cared about his friends. I could tell he cared because when Johnny and Dally died he got really sick and passed out for 2.5 days. The quote I got that matches my observation is on page 154 after Dally was shot “My stomach gave a violent start I turned into a hunk of ice” That means he was so sad that Dally died that he got very sick.
• Another observation I made about a character is that Darry took gymnastic lessons. This means that he has a soft side. It means that because he was not scared to show that he liked gymnastics even though it is a girl sport.
• Another observation I made was that when Two Bit was at the hospital trying to see Johnny he wouldn’t take no for an answer. This is a good observation because it means two bit isn’t afraid to speak up. Some people are afraid to ask for what they want but Two Bit did speak up.
• Another observation I made was that Johnny told Ponyboy to stay gold when he was dying. This means that Johnny cares for Ponyboy. It means that because Johnny wants Ponyboy to live a good life.
• The last observation I made was that when Dally ran out of the hospital and robbed a Grocery store because Johnny died. That showed me he loved Johnny. That was meaningful because Dally loved Johnny so much that when Johnny died he went crazy and robbed a grocery store because he was trying to somehow hide the pain.

1.In chapter 8 while Ponyboy and Two-Bit were at the hospital seeing Johnny, Johnny’s mother came to see Johnny. Johnny didn’t want to see her because he knew that she would just yell at him and tell him how much trouble he was causing the family. On page 122Johnny said “‘I don’t want to see her.’ His voice was rising. ‘She’s probable come to tell me about all the trouble I’m causing her and about how glad her and the old man’ll be when I’m dead. Well, tell her to leave me alone. For once’” This really showed that he doesn’t like him mom or dad at all.
2.Also in the inner circle people talked about how Cherry came to tell the Greasers the rules of the rumble. The rules were only hands, NO pipes, guns, knifes, or anything like that. When she was telling Ponyboy that, Ponyboy wanted her to go and see Johnny, but she didn’t want to. She didn’t want to go see Johnny because he had killed someone that was very special to her. At this point Ponyboy got mad at her for not wanting to see him.
3.Ponyboy thought that Cherry was being a trader because she was on both sides and she also wouldn’t go and see Johnny in the hospital. Ponyboy felt this way because she said that she would be on his side and then she wouldn’t even go and see Johnny.
4.Chapter 9 a lot of different things happened. First in this chapter there was the big rumble against Greasers and Socs this fight would show who the winners were. As the fight started the Greasers were doing bad and all getting hurt. Ponyboy got hurt the worse out of all the fighters. As the fight went on soon the Socs ran away to their car and the rumble was over. At this point all the Greasers were happy that they beat the Socs.
5.Something really sad also happened in this chapter and that was that Johnny died. After the rumble was over Ponyboy and Dally went to go and telling Johnny that they had won. Once they told Johnny all about it he told them that “Useless… fighting’s no good.”(Page 148) he also told Ponyboy to stay gold. These were his last words and after that he died. Dally was so mad he started hitting the wall and then after that he ran out.
6.When Johnny died it was the hardest for all the Greasers because everyone always said that they couldn’t go on without Johnny, but they could go on without anyone else. I think they said this because Johnny didn’t really have a family and all of the boys cared about him so much they didn’t want him to leave, because then he wouldn’t have anyone.
7.I think S.E. Hinton titled her book The Outsiders because the Greasers were different then everyone else and they weren’t treated the same as Socs. Also that most of them didn’t have families so they were by themselves and there friends were the closets thing to family.

• “The greasers beat the socs in a rumble because the rules are that there are no weapons and the first ones to run will lose and the socs ran”.
• After the rumble Dally and Ponyboy went to see Johnny when they were talking to him he died and dally started to hit the wall in anger then took of and left Ponyboy.
• After Ponyboy hitch hiked a way home that Dally called from a phone booth and told the gang to meet him in the lot and that he just robbed a liquor store when they came out they saw him running and the police came and he pulled out an unloaded gun so the police would kill him and he was dead before he hit the ground all because he couldn’t live without Johnny

From the fishbowl on Tuesday, I thought the inner circle had some good details that they said in the book.
1. One thing I liked that they said was how Johnny didn’t want to see his mother. It was said on page 122 when Johnny says, “I don’t want to see her”. When this happened, it showed how Johnny had despised his family and how much he hated his mother.
2. Another moment was when the Greasers win the rumble. The book has talked about it for the past few chapters and when it finally came, the Greasers won. When the rumble began, Dally had showed up unexpected.
3. A 3rd moment was when Johnny said to Ponyboy, “Stay Gold.” It was from a poem that was read on page 77. What did this mean to Ponyboy? Was it meant for Ponyboy to stay calm and the way he is? It meant that Pony should stay the way he is and stay strong.
4. A 4th moment was as Johnny Cade had died. When Johnny died, Ponyboy and Dally started to wimp and cry. Johnny was a true member of the Greasers, and a lovable one too.
5. The final point to describe is how Dally had stormed out of the hospital when Johnny died. This shows that Dally had actually respected Johnny and he loved as a friend. This is connected to the love with Darry and Soda to Ponyboy as they cried when they saw each other at the hospital.

1. When the inner circle was talking about when Johnny said on page 148 “stay gold” I didn’t know it was from a poem in the church and thought that was really cool.
2. I just realized when Johnny said fighting was useless that he never liked to fight. That he never wanted to fight. Maybe because of his parents foght all the time that mad him mad and that’s why he didn’t want to see him.
3. When they were talking about if Ponyboy if he still like Cherry. They said that he didn’t but I still think he thinks he still thinks she is pretty but he thinks she is a trader. He still want to be her friend.
4. when they were talking about when Johnny died I think none of them will stop fighting I think they will fight more for Johnny’s death.
5. When they talked about the rumble Dally had to fight Paul his old football buddy. I think that it is stupid that they are not friends any more because they are in different gangs. As we know gangs can change the way you think.

The inner circle did a good job by explaining the chapter well enough to explain the chapters to someone who didn’t read it and had no clue what was goin on in the book at the moment.
• In chapter 8 while Ponyboy and Two-Bit were at the hospital seeing Johnny, Johnny’s mother came to see Johnny.
• The rules to the rumble were that there would be no weapons and the first one to run loses.
• Another observation that I heard and read about was in chapter 9 was after the big brawl when the greasers won they went to see Johnny because he was about to die and in the end of chapter 9 he dose and everyone is sad because Johnny was the one who kept the gang together because he was like the pet of the gang and was so precious.

What I learned from the inner circle is….
1. They talked a lot about the rumble and how the Greasers won that “war”.
What happened was that the Greaser and the Socs decided to get in this big rumble because Johnny killed Bob. So all the Greasers and the Socs go to this vacant lot and the greasers won the rumble.
2. Then they talked about how Johnny died and how that was a big impact in all the members life’s because he was like a pet to the gang and he was just really close to all the people in the Greasers gang. What happened was that after the rumble Two-Bit and Ponyboy went to the hospital to tell Johnny what had happened and Ponyboy was about to tell Johnny, but he died practically in his arms, this is what happened. Page # 148 “Ponyboy.” I barely heard him. I came closer and leaned over to hear what he was going to say. “Stay gold, Ponyboy. Stay gold…” The pillow seemed to sink a little, and Johnny died.
3. They also talked about since Johnny died it was a big impact to the members of the gang they were right. Toward the end of chapter 9 Dally started to freak out because Johnny was dead. Dally was punching the wall in the hospital and was just ecstatic. He was hart broken. This is just one way it impacted one of the members.
4. Toward the end of their conversation they started to get a little more into the novel. They were saying how before the rumble that Ponyboy and Randy were one of the smarter people in their own gangs. They say this because they are the ones that think it’s not smart to fight just because of what happened. Maybe they think that they can solve it by at least talking about it and not killing or hurting some other people because even if they did what would that solve; nothing, just the fact that you beat up some kids in another gang.
5. They talked about how Cherry was a trader to all of them. Ponyboy thought that she was a trader to her own Gang the Socs and the Greasers. They found out that she’s a spy and that she’s telling them what the Socs are saying. Ponyboy is the one really who is talking this in the bad way. Every one else is saying that it is good because they can know what there next move is or what they are going to do.
6. I think the reason why S.E. Hinton choose to title this book “The Outsiders” because it’s really about how outsiders and how they have to try to fit in. The other gangs aren’t poor and they at least have something for them like descent close and doesn’t look grunge like the Greasers do. The Greasers are really the outsiders of every one in their society. They even said that they judge them more than every one else, even out of the gangs. This is why I think she titled the book the Outsiders.

1. Some of the thing that really caught my attention to was when Dally and Ponyboy went to go see Johnny after the rumble. When Johnny was in the room dying on page 148 Dally was telling Johnny how they were writing editorials about Johnny in the paper and Dally said “yeah, they’re calling you a hero now and heroizin’ all the greasers. We’re all proud of you, buddy.” Johnny’s eyes glowed that was all Johnny ever wanted was for Dally to be proud of him. Ten Johnny called Ponyboy’s name and told him to stay gold it was from the poem.
2. But the thing I really connected was how Johnny felt when he ran out of the hospital because Johnny had died right in front of Ponyboy and Dally because Johnny was like Dally’s son Dally really couldn’t live with out Johnny that’s how he felt.
3. Ponyboy did not know what to do I think I mean he lost his best friend somebody he could talk to and when they were in the church there friendship got stronger and they got closer. So I think Ponyboy felt so bad that he lost his friend and he probably thinks it is all his fault that Johnny is dead.
4. When Johnny told Dally that it was useless fighting it was no good. That was something Dally could remember every time Dally wants to get in a fight he could remember what Johnny said.
5. I really like these chapter they brought out Dally sensitive side and how he really felt about his kind of like kid brother.
