Chapters 6 & 7 Fishbowl Reflection

Think about the May 2 fishbowl discussion about Chapters Six and Seven of The Outsiders. Write a reflection of at least five different observations about the characters. Each observation should include explanation and elaboration. Within one of your observation, you must include a quote with in-text citation from the novel. Feel free to include any ideas that the inside circle may have missed. You might want to consider some of the following to help guide you:
  • What are the qualities that make someone a hero?
  • What are some of the characteristics of a strong family?

1. Johnny gets hurt trying to save kids from the burning church, something falls on his back. 2. Johnny’s family doesn’t care about him, his parents don’t even care if he comes home or not. 3. Darry, Soadpop, and Ponyboy don’t lock their doors because they know that one of their friends might need a place to stay the night, and they don’t really have anything valuable 4. Randy asked Ponyboy why he would risk his life to save the kids, he said “I read about you in the paper,” “How come?” and Ponyboy said “I don’t know. Maybe I felt like playing hero.” 5. When Ponyboy walks into the waiting room, the first thing he notices is that Darry really does care, because he was actually crying, because he was scared that he had lost Ponyboy like he lost his parents.

The inner circle for chapter six and seven helped me understand many aspects of the characters. They helped me understand how the characters became heroes and what S.E. Hinton thinks a hero is. The inner circle also talked about what S.E. Hinton thinks makes a strong family.
I think that Johnny, and Ponyboy were considered heroes because when they saw the fire and heard that there were still kids inside they didn’t think about helping them they just jumped into the church to help before even thinking about their actions. And while they were in there they weren’t scared because they knew that it was the right thing to do and that the kids lives were more valuable than theirs. Dally on the other hand is a hero for helping Johnny and Ponyboy get out alive, and if it wasn’t for him Johnny and Ponyboy could have died in the church. A quote in chapter six of how Dally saved Johnny’s life was this “We think the towheaded kid is going to be all right. He burned one arm pretty badly, though, trying to drag the other kid out the window.” Page 95

The inner circle also helped me understand what S.E. Hinton thinks a good strong family is. They talked about every aspect that S.E. Hinton talked about in the book. And now I know that she thinks a strong family is one that trusts eachother and no matter what looks out for one another, they also said that it seems like she thinks strong families should be able to listen to one another when one is feeling down about something instead of ignoring them. That is what the inner circle helped me learn more about.

I have learned a lot of things about these two chapters. I learned that Ponyboy and Johnny were the ones that started the church fire by one of their cigarettes. “I bet we started it,” I said to Johnny. “We must have dropped a lighted cigarette or something. I think a strong family is one who sticks together and trusts each other.

On may 2 the inner circle had me thinking about the charters more.

• The inner circle had me thinking if Johnny died how it would affect pony boys life. Because if he dies Ponyboy friend is dead
• And since they went in to the flaming church and saved the kids made every one not thinking of the murder.
• Darry and soda where wondering where Johnny and Ponyboy where for the time. Because they ran off with out telling them
• Johnny and Ponyboy where in the news paper and said the two heroes saved six little kids. All of them where eight years old or so and they where in the back room
• Darry and soda both knew that Ponyboy was a hero all along but Ponyboy didn’t know. Ponyboy just had to find it in side of him
• In the book on page 92 it says “we pushed open the door and found four or five little kids about eight years old or younger”.

All and all the inner circle did a great job.

1.Pony boy goes in a burning church to save the lives of five kids. He walks out of the hospital bed when Darry is standing at the door then he realizes that Darry really does care for him by the look on his face.
2.Johnny also went into the burning church and he had a horrible problem because he had broken his back and might be paralyzed for life. His parents don’t care for him at all.
3.Darry and Soda Pop always are there for all of their friends. They are willing to keep their house unlocked. They do this so in case their friends need a place to stay they are welcome to come in.
Now after all that had happened instead of Pony boy and Johnny being noticed as killers they are heroes. Johnny and Pony boy and Dally have shown the characteristics of true heroes by risking their life in order to save the five kids. That is what chapters 6 and 7 include.

• Some of the qualities of being a hero are saving some one when their in danger and not really caring about anything else but getting them out safe and alive.

• Johnny gets hurt trying to save kids from a burning church that’s starting to collapse

• Some of the strong characteristics of a strong family are like they all love each other they do stuff for each other and like they help each other out

• Randy asked Ponyboy why he would risk his life to save the kids, he said “I read about you in the paper,” “How come?” and Ponyboy said “I don’t know. Maybe I felt like playing hero.” I thought this was pretty cool because Ponyboy is talking to a soc and that’s rare because the soc could have gone and beaten Ponyboy up and he didn’t he just wanted to talk

• i also think that Johnny and Ponyboy started the church fire because how else would it have started so I think that like a cigarette fell on the carpet and started it

The people in the fish bowl session did a really good job helping us understand what, so far is going on in the book. From the Fish Bowl I learned,
1) Johnny, Ponyboy, saved some kids that were in a church fire. No one ever expected that a greaser, like them would do anything to help anyone else out. Johnny and Ponyboy were being selfless in saving the kids, knowing that they could be burned, and killed in the process. On pg.91 and 92 it shows that they went into the building to save the kids, “I’ll get them, don’t worry!” I started at dead run for the church, and the man caught my arm. “I’ll get them. You kids stay out!” I jerked loose and ran on. All I could think about was: We started it. We started it! I wasn’t about to go thought the flaming that door, so I slammed a big rock though a window and pulled myself in. It was a wonder I didn’t cut myself to death, now that I think about it. “Hey, Ponyboy.” I looked around, startled. I hadn’t realized Johnny had been right behind me all the way. This quote shows that they went in there even when the circumstances weren’t on there side.
2) The Fish bowl group talked about what makes a hero. They said being selfless and doing something for others. I would also like to say being a hero means putting someone else before your self. When they went into the burning building they were well aware that they could die. They looked beyond that and went in anyway to get those children out. That is what I call a hero.
3) The fish bowl group also talked about the strong characterizes of a family. They said trust and being able to talk to them. I agree totally. I also think that a good family is there for you no matter what. Like when Johnny killed the Soc. His family might have not cared but his friends that he considers family was. They were there for him when the times were tough. Even in the fire they stuck together.
4) I that Ponyboy have changed in the last few chapters. He is more cautious about everything and I think that he is more serious. HE jumps when he hears thing and he gets mad at the slightest things. I think the whole murder and running away has changed his perspective on everything. I think he thinks that he is going to be caught and charged so the fun has been taking out of everything.
5) The last thing I would like to say is I'm glad Ponyboy realized that his brother Darry is there for him. When they heard that they were in the fire he rushed over to the hospital to see his brother. If he didn’t care he wouldn’t have been there to see him. He cried when he saw him and that meant he loved his brother no matter what

Chapter 6 and 7 Blog
1. When the church on the top of Jay Mountain caught fire – When Johnny, Pony, and Dally got back to the church there was a group of kids and adults surrounding the church. Then one adult said the next thing I new was that the church was on fire then Pony said “I bet we started it, I said to Johnny. We must have dropped a lighted cigarette or something” (pg. 91)
2. When Johnny and Pony heard little kids cry inside the church – Pony and Johnny ran as fast as they could to the church because they didn’t want anything to happen to the kids inside. Pony threw a rock through the window as there entry point. When they both got inside they looked for the kids and once they found all of them they took them one at a time out the window safely. As they got each kid out Pony kept getting hotter and hotter but he didn’t no why.
3. On there way out of the church – Once pony got the last kid out he jumped out the window and he knew Johnny was right behind him. Once Pony was out safely he was wondering where Johnny was and Pony new that the churches ceilings were getting weaker and weaker. All of a sudden Pony heard a crash and the ceiling of the church had collapsed on Johnny.
4. On the way to the hospital – Pony woke up and he realized he wasn’t with Johnny or Dally so he didn’t know where he was. Once he got his vision straight he noticed that he was in an ambulance with one of the school teachers from the church. Pony asked if Dally and Johnny were alright and they said Dally would be fine but they didn’t know about Johnny they said he was in critical condition.
5. The recovery when they got to the hospital – Once they all reached the hospital they all got sent to there rooms. When Pony was in his room Darry and soda showed up. Pony had never seen Darry cry even when there parents died he didn’t cry but he was crying now. That showed Pony that he really did care for him and would do anything to have him back.
Observations – The inner circle did a very good job on the conversations. They always had something to say about every brought up point. They also did a good job of preparing with notes so they had plenty of ideas to bring up.

I learned alot about these chapters like,Johnny breaks his back trying to save the kids in the fire. His Family Doesn't care at all that he is hurt and possibly dyeing they could careless about him. Also that hey started it by dropping a lit cigarette. The inner circle helped me under stand it alot better and they did a great job.

1. From the beginning of the book Jonny has changed from a nice guy that doesn’t do anything wrong, to the guy that starts to stick up for himself and other people. For example in chapter 4 Johnny and Ponyboy are getting jumper, and Ponyboy get’s knocked unconscious from being drowned, but Ponyboy obviously didn’t allow that to happen and killed Bob. In chapter 4 Ponyboy says “You killed him, huh, Johnny?” Johnny replies saying “Yeah I had to. They were drowning you, Pony. They might have killed you. And they had a blade… they were gonna beat me up….”

2. During chapter 4 we know Johnny kills bob. This is an experience that I think no one can forget, especially Johnny. Johnny and Ponyboy have to run away and live off bologna for a week. I think this experience has changed Johnny because he knows he has made a mistake and has changed into someone he’s not. I think that he is realizing that he misses the gang and hates how his family treats him. Also as Ponyboy also experienced this I think he is realizing what a mistake was made. I think he also misses the gang and is worrying about the cops because he says “How’s Sodapop? Are the fuzz after us? Is Darry all right? Do the boys know where we are?” I think that Johnny and Pony are starting to regret what happened.

3. In chapter 2 and 3 you meat Cherry, which is Bob’s girlfriend. Cherry and Ponyboy start to kick something off but then Cherry tells Pony that she can’t talk to him at school or anything, also in chapter 3 you find out that Cherry is spying for the greasers. As we keep reading into chapter 4 you find out the Cherry feels like it is her fault for Bob’s death, In the inner circle someone asks “Why is Cherry spying for the greasers is she’s a soc?” and that’s what I also wonder. If she feels bad for Bob’s dearth wouldn’t she be trying to get back at the greasers for killing her boyfriend instead of sticking up for them and spying for them?

4. I think if S.E. Hilton would have to tell what she thought about the greasers and there bonds, I think she would say that it is a weird kinda bond because one minute some of the greasers and socs are getting along and the next second their fighting in a rumble. Also the greasers have a lot of drinking and alcohol problems yet they don’t seem to be affected by it.

5. As we start getting to the end of the book it seems like Ponyboy is realizing the good in his life. I think this because he see’s how Johnny’s parents treat him and how he dies from a horrible tragedy. Also how a lot of there gang members have to sleep at there house because of one thing or another
